"I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one." (John 17:23)
Sin has broken us from the way God intended us to live, which is to be in union and communion with God, others, and oneself. The only way to come back into this union and communion is through Jesus.
Espoused To Christ
When Jesus died on the cross, he married the Church to himself. Through the sacrament of baptism, we are brought into the family of God forming a covenantal bond with God and his family. The Father has given us, his children, to Jesus in a spiritual espousal. We are given Divine union through the sacrament of Holy Communion. Because we are married to Jesus, he will take us on the path, uniquely designed for each soul, that will heal us and reveal to us how God has made us to be so that we can join him in heaven in the eternal union.
Espoused In Christ
Jesus makes us more like himself. When he brings us into relationship with our Christian brothers and sisters, Jesus wants to love us through the other, revealing our espousal to him in one another. Our union and communion with others happens when we are of one mind, heart, and spirit in Jesus. He leads us through the brokenness and reconciliation to bring us into his peace.
The spiritual milestones are the major marks in our journey of faith and are the building blocks through which we progress in our relationship with the Trinity and Community. As we rest in our espousal to Jesus, he will carry us on the unique path made for each person, ultimately leading in us to make us like himself. As we become more like him, he will draw us into deeper relationship with one another because it is by Jesus' love that we love one another. Our progress happens when we cultivate Mary's four virtues (humility, obedience, surrender, and trust). Our "yes" to Jesus opens us up to cooperate with his movements and we allow ourselves to be shaped by his love into who he's made us to be.
